The City Serve Skinny

Many of you have been asking great questions about the upcoming (and historic!) City Serve Day.

If you haven’t heard of it, City Serve is being put on by many, many churches in the Greater Austin area, working together for the good of the city.

It really began about a year ago by asking a series of questions:

If the Church went away, would the city grieve our absence?
Does the city know what we are for, or only what we are against?
When the city hears the word, “Church”, how do they feel?
What is a tangible way the “Big C” church could let the city know we love it and are for it?

Together, we dreamed up City Serve, a first of its kind event in Austin.

City Serve is the weekend of October 29-30 (Mosaic Church will be participating on the 29th), and is composed of 600 micro-projects all over the Greater Austin Area, primarily focused on schools, parks, public areas, and service to non-profits outside the local church, that we are hoping thousands of Christians (and their friends and neighbors) participate in on one weekend.

These projects are designed to be around 3 hours each in scope (some might be a little less or more, depending on how they go), and many of them were created with families in mind.

So, briefly, here are the 6 things you need to do and know to be in the loop and to help make the weekend a great one and a win for churches and God’s people in Central Texas (that’s you!):

a. Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 29 and plan to participate with a friend, your family or your community group.

b. Register for a project, either at the website lovewhereyouliveatx.com or on Sunday, October 9 when we talk about it on a Sunday morning. Some of these projects will fill up quickly, you may want to find the one you want and reserve your spot.

c. Give to the special offering we will be receiving this weekend, to help fund what God is doing tin the city through His church. The last weekend in October is normally when we have our annual Harvest Fest. I know some kids (including mine) will be bummed we aren’t doing this, but this year we wanted to take the time, energy and money we normally invest into having something “just for us”, and give that all away instead! So, we will be taking what we would normally spend on the Harvest Fest, adding it to the special offering, and giving it all away.

d. Know that when you go, you are really going to participate and make a statement to the city about what the church is all about. You may not feel that significant, and your project may not feel like you have just solved a major world crisis, but the idea is that together we have something to give to Austin overall. Every body counts, and every hour we sow is huge!

e. Be aware that we will have child care available that morning for 0-Pre K kids only at Mosaic. We would encourage you to bring your children with you to the project site, and help get them involved in serving their city.

f. Invite an unchurched neighbor or friend to go with you!

That’s it! Now you’re in the know. Thanks for believing and dreaming with us to make this day a great one!

Love,
Morgan
