Storm Relief Update + Mosaic is Reopening March 7!

Hi everyone!

First of all, I want you to know that we have been praying for you, for your family and loved ones, and for our city and carrying you in our hearts as we all huddle, shiver and gather our way through this challenging weather, and the humanitarian crisis it has laid at our feet. You are loved!

I want to do two things: Update you quickly on our relief efforts and communicate with you about our re-opening. Here we go!

Winter Storm Update

Again, it’s been another whirlwind of the last 24 hours. Last night, we housed close to 50 guests and volunteers between our two buildings. Some of our guests went home after the first night, replaced by many more as the day went on yesterday. Many of you brought food and supplies, and maybe most crucially of all, one of our members brought huge buckets of water from his family’s swimming pool to help keep our lone functional toilet flushing. We haven’t been able to melt snow fast enough to keep it working, and that gift of pool water was incredible. Later in the day, the city brought two port-a-potties into our parking lot, and that served those in our main building.

We anticipate we will house our guests for at least one more night. Even when the power comes back on for many, because of burst pipes and flooding, they have nothing to go back to, so we are working on a plan of care and a path forward for each situation.

Additionally, we have continued to deliver groceries to families and crisis situations across the city, including a nursing home near our facility. Those in long-term care places are particularly vulnerable, and we anticipate help being needed at nursing homes today and possibly tomorrow.

If you or someone you know needs help, please complete our Need/Give Help form HERE. We have people who have proven to be willing and able to help you. *This form will no longer be available after 8 pm tonight however all requests submitted before then will be addressed in the order in which they are received.*

And if you’d like to contribute financially to our relief efforts, you can give HERE.

THANK YOU FOR BEING THE CHURCH OF JESUS. Despite all the challenges associated with transforming overnight into one of the 7 churches in Austin that are operating as a 24/7 shelter, we are grateful to have been able to do that, and we have done it together. *Tonight will officially be our last night open as a shelter. Power has returned for many of those staying with us and for those still without, we are finding them alternate shelter and sending them with food and other critical supplies.*

Above all, my prayer has been for the name of Jesus to be honored and glorified through all that has happened, and I believe it has. As you hear me say often, I believe and want others to believe, that the city is better when the church of Jesus is there. This is how we prove that.

Mosaic Church is Reopening March 7

While I know many of you are reading this from friends’ or loved ones’ homes in which you have been forced to relocate, and Mosaic Church’s reopening may be the last thing on your mind right now, I (Morgan) did commit to giving you an update last Sunday about this, and we are excited about this as well, even in the middle of a lot of difficulty.

All that to say, we will be reopening Sunday, March 7, with two in-person services at 9 am and 11 am. Pastor Jim Laffoon has rescheduled his trip to be here with us that Sunday so you’re in for a treat!

Initially, we will have an identical capacity limit and registration system as last fall and will communicate that to you in a timely fashion. We also anticipate being able to quickly increase our capacity as Covid numbers continue to decrease, and are planning to be open permanently from here on out, barring something dramatic and unforeseen. I hope that encourages you! And, of course, we will remain online each and every week.

What about mKids and Mosaic Students?

  • mkids will reopen on March 7, starting with classrooms for ages 6 weeks – 1 year old only at this time. mKids will continue reopening classrooms on a rolling basis. Please stay tuned for further communication. If you’re a member and would like to help serve as a teacher in mKids, we’d love to have you! Sign up to be a mKids team member HERE.
  • Mosaic Students (6 – 12 grade) will have two Welcome Back events outside on our property on March 14 and March 21. Indoor gatherings will resume starting March 28 in the Student Center. We anticipate having middle school students meet during the 9 am service, high school students during the 11 am service, and we will continue the 1 pm Zoom call for those not yet attending in person. To be kept in the loop, please visit our website and join the Mosaic Students email list HERE

That’s all I’ve got!

As always, please join us online this Sunday. Jim Laffoon had to reschedule his trip due to this weather, so we will be continuing in our series, “What About?”, and continue to look at meaningful “clues” and reasons as to why faith in God is plausible and why the Christian faith is true. This week’s reason is especially timely, in a way only God could arrange, as I trust you’ll see.

Much love,
Morgan
