Real Life Portraits

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ, a Christian, and a servant of the word (Luke 1) can be portrayed in a lot of different ways.

Let’s look at the portrayal through social media. On the interwebs, for example, it can look like the name of Jesus getting overlaid onto extreme behavior and causes of all kinds.

Or, it can look like a very sepia-toned, filtered coffee and bible pic (#blessed). It can also look like a barrage of inflammatory questions on social media. What is the church? Who is the church? Are evangelical Christians doing more harm than good, or vice versa? Is God anti-gay or anti-women? What does it mean to be pro-this, or anti-that? Questions abound, opinions abound, emotions abound.

What does the world see when they see us? Who does the world see? In a sea of sound bites and shifting cultural standards, how do we show Jesus to the world?

Fortunately, for all time in all cultures, Jesus Christ has himself given us a true “north star”:

1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
2. Love others as you love yourself.

I call these #TheWinningCommandments.

But what does loving God and others look like when we walk it out?

Well, how do we show anyone we love them?

In the context of my marriage, I know my husband, Wyatt, and love him–but how does he see and know that? Simply put, he knows through my actions.

Sometimes, for me, love looks like the action of saying yes to things that interest him, even when they might not interest me. But, surprisingly, many times, the time invested in something that is not “me-oriented” ends up being meaningful and impactful for not only Wyatt, but for my own heart, too.

Who knew doing for others helps you out? Oh, wait…

Jesus Christ, our wise and loving Savior, did.

He knew.

He knew that when we serve others, we are loving Him, blessing others and blessing our own souls–all at once. Service brings shalom– it is miraculous, peace-filled, community healing.

And, yet, sometimes loving others with all we have going on, can feel like an overwhelming task list.

But wait! Don’t check out now! I have some good news! There are many ways to be “servants of the word” and show Jesus well to those around us. Here are a few meaningful opportunities Mosaic has created to help people love God and others well:

  1. Consider helping feed our homeless community.

Get your friends and family together, or your Mosaic Community together (once a month, once every six weeks, four times a year–whenever you can) to feed our homeless community. Mosaic provides food for around 60-70 homeless friends every Sunday.

It takes a village to do this work, but many hands make light work! And it’s a fun thing to rally together and do!

Do you want to learn more about how you can do this? Adopt a Sunday on this form, then get details and recipe ideas!

  2. Consider supporting our foster and adoptive community.

Even if you don’t feel called to foster or adopt, we can help by serving and supporting those who do. At Mosaic, we are building a holistic approach to serving, helping out, coming alongside, and encouraging the foster and adoptive families, with hopes to grow and expand as we build support.

Do you want to learn more about how you and your crew can serve others in this area? We have a list of ways ready for you! Sign up for our support team.

  3. Consider attending the Service Fair hosted by Mosaic Communities on Sunday, September 11th.

I’ll be there! We have so many other communities for you and ways to be “servants of the word” in a way that creates shalom (peace) in our city. So:

    a. Save the date to be in person.
    b. Stop by and get to know a Mosaic Community and be about the mission of God with others.
    c. Connect through the Mosaic Communities directory.

So what does the world see when they see us? (IRL – outside of social media and the interwebs). As followers of Jesus Christ, servants of the word, I pray they see us serving others in community so that they will see and know our God. #HisKingdomOnEarth

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
– Matthew 5:16

With you and for you,

Cori
