New Series Starting This Sunday

Have you ever heard someone say something so powerful, you never forgot it?

Years ago, I came across an interview with a prominent art and social critic who said something I have never forgotten. He said, in speaking about people:

“Stories are so powerful we will literally die for them.”

That stuck with me, though I have never been able to find that interview or recall who said it.

Stories are so powerful we will die for them.

And that thought is true in multiple ways, isn’t it?

Consider:

  • people become martyrs for stories they believe in
  • parents and spouses often give their lives to preserve the future story of their loved ones

We live in a “golden age” of television and movies (the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike aside), where more stories are being produced across more channels than ever before. As a culture, we are living for, watching more stories than ever, even if it costs us more money, time, and sometimes even our conscience.

In a very real way, without stories, we can’t make sense of the world.

In the same way, we believe as Christians we can’t make sense of our own world without God’s story.

And isn’t it amazing that God’s story comes to us as just that–in a narrative form in both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures?

Even the very structure of God’s Word comes to us in a way that speaks to us in our most deeply desired and easily understood way.

So, how can we see ourselves in “God’s story” and connect to it in a way that actually changes our lives for the better? What kind of story is worth living for—and maybe even dying for?

At Mosaic during the month of August, we will be looking at four incredible stories of people from the Old Testament who found themselves swept up into something much larger than their own lives. I think by seeing their paths, we can walk ours a little more clearly.

I hope you’ll join us for a series simply called “Stories.”

After all, everybody’s got one.
