My All-Time Favorite Quote

One thing I get asked a lot is: what is your all-time favorite quote?

If you know me at all, you know I tend to drop a quote or two into messages I communicate, conversations I have and emails I send…so I guess I can see why I might get asked this.

So what is my all-time favorite quote? I think the one that continues to speak to me the most, and that consistently moves me the most, is this quote from C.S. Lewis’ The Problem of Pain:

“In self-giving, if anywhere, we touch a rhythm of all creation and of all being. For the Eternal Word gives Himself in mortal sacrifice; and that not only on Calvary. For when He was crucified on Calvary He did that in the wild weather of His outlying provinces what He had done at home in glory and gladness. From before the foundation of the world, Christ surrenders begotten Deity back to begetting Deity, in obedience. And as the Son glorifies the Father, so also the Father glorifies the Son.”

What’s Lewis saying? On one hand, he is telling you why Jesus of Nazareth could give away his life on the cross: Jesus could give away his life then (“outlying provinces” would be here on Earth, first century) because, within the context of the Trinity, He had always been doing it (His “home” of glory and gladness) for forever.

Lewis calls that kind of self-giving the “rhythm of all creation;” in other words, self-giving is not only what makes the world go round, but self-giving is also what makes the world great.

The Self-Giving of Jesus Christ is, quite literally, why you and I are here.

This past Sunday, in case you missed it, we communicated a couple of different pathways for you to touch this divine rhythm: through participation in either a ministry team, or a Mosaic community group, or both.

As our church has begun to re-gather, and more and more people are joining us in person and online, we have discovered (surprise!) our need for the people of God to step into that rhythm as well.

If you are not connected in one of these meaningful ways yet at Mosaic, or if you were…but now you’re not…and you need to be again…now is your time!

What I am saying?

On one hand, yes, I’m saying, our vibrant, community-impacting, disciple-making, diverse local church needs you.

And yet, on the other, to leverage Lewis’ thought here a final time: you need this church in order to step into the very center of self-giving, which is really what makes life meaningful, and to give away what’s been given to you!

You are welcome to connect with ministry teams here (we’ll get you going and train you!), and/or with a Mosaic community group here.

Thanks for being a part of the journey. I’m excited to start something brand new with all of us this Sunday (No worries…I’ll explain what it is when you get there!).

See you soon!

Much love,

Morgan
