14 Apr Good Friday and Easter Sunday
I hope you are having a great Holy Week in the middle of quite a lot of turmoil in the world. I know “Holy Week” can seem to be a bit arbitrary in terms of where it falls on the calendar, but the observance of it and the remembrance of it are crucial to our lives, especially our spiritual lives.
The other day Carrie and I were talking about some new kind of delivery service that delivered yet another thing to your door, so you didn’t even have to leave the house for that “thing” again. And of course it is an amazing time to live in the day we do, with so much convenience at our fingertips. My first thought (to my shame) was, “Wow, I bet we could get even more done that way, if we weren’t spending time on that.”
I realized, at that moment, that I had become trapped in an endless cycle of “do more—be more—do more”. Yes, I could pay to get the thing delivered, but then I would have to work even harder to pay for the delivery because I was too busy to get it in the first place with all that I am doing.
I am grateful for the convenience, but when each moment of our lives is measured in “how much can I get done?”, I’m pretty sure we have lost something along the way.
And in those terms, even thinking about slowing down and contemplating on the gift of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus seems like an agonizing demand. Slow down? Contemplate? What?
We’ve got a great opportunity to do just that this Friday night from 7-8 for our Good Friday service (child care is available for 0 – Pre K) and then again on Sunday morning at 9, 10:45 and 12:30.
If you’ve been here before on Easter, you know we put a lot of work into celebrating and honoring the person of Jesus and all He has done for us, and as you come, I would hope that you would consider inviting someone. I believe you will be proud of your church and have the opportunity to connect them to something great and a message bigger than themselves.
But apart from all that, please set aside some time to really dig into the Gospel accounts, and read and reflect for yourself on the matchless life of Jesus of Nazareth, and look full in the face of the love and heart of God for you.
More than more time, we need more time spent with Him!
I look forward to seeing you this weekend—it’s going to be a great one.
