Discussion Guide: Four Marks of Maturity

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today, we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the primary goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together?

This Week’s Topic

Four Marks of Maturity

Discussion Question

What is something you loved or enjoyed as a kid that you still love or enjoy?

Unity

Romans 12: 4-5

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Ephesians 4:3-6

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Why do you think unity is important to God?

How does our individual maturity help us walk in unity as a church?

What practices can we pursue as individuals to cultivate greater unity as a church?

Purity

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.  For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

Why do you think sexual morality is important to God?

How does our individual commitment to purity strengthen the church at large?

How can we, as a church, help support and encourage purity in one another’s lives?

Humility

Philippians 2:2-4

…then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Why do you think humility is important to God?

How does our commitment to humility strengthen the church?

What are some indicators of humility in a person’s life?

Responsibility

Romans 13:8

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

Why do you think responsibility is important to God?

Pastor Morgan said that responsibility may be the ultimate mark of maturity for a Christian. Why do you think that might be true?

How does our willingness to be responsible help support the mission of God in the world?

Closing Thought

James 1:4

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Spend the final minutes of your time together sharing which of these areas of maturity you would like to grow in this year, then pray for one another, asking God to guide and grow you in 2025.
