Discussion Guide: Family Matters Week 1

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today, we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the primary goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together?

This Week’s Topic

Discussion Questions

What is something distinct about our “culture” in Austin that you love?

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God Must Be Worshiped

Fanny Crosby, Tell Me the Story of Jesus

Tell Me the Story of Jesus

Write on my Heart Every Word

Tell me the story most precious

Sweetest that ever was heard

Ephesians 3:10

[God’s] intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms…

How would you define the word “worship”?

What does it look like to intentionally worship God in your daily life?

What kinds of things have you been tempted to worship or prioritize before God? How have you navigated those challenges?

God Must Be Shared

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Morgan Stephens

The Christian Gospel says God is meant to be shared, that relationships are more important than success, that love is cruciform, it takes the shape of the cross, love is only love when it is given away and shared.

Morgan & Carrie Stephen, Friendship Can Save the World

We do not love a diversity of people to elevate diversity as a cultural value; we love a diversity of people because that love makes us more Christlike.

Who first shared God with you?

How are the three persons of God uniquely different?

How can God’s willingness to share themselves with one another help us love others better?

God Must Be Named

Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Morgan Stephens

In this world, in this city, in your work, Jesus must be named. The heart of the Gospel is to tell the story of Jesus.

How is God “named” when we love and serve the people around us?

Which of your gifts and talents has God used to exalt his name in the world?

When and where has God given you opportunities to join his mission to love the world?

Closing Thought

Take some time to share prayer requests and pray for the upcoming week before you end your time together.
