Discussion Guide: See the Christmas Light Week 3

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today, we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the primary goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together?

This Week’s Topic

See the Christmas Light

Today’s Topic

John 1:9-14

Discussion Questions

Where is your favorite place in Austin to look at Christmas lights?

John 1:9-14

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The True Light

John 1:9

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

John 8:12

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

What does it mean that Jesus is described as “the true light”?

How does Jesus’ light impact “everyone”? How might this shape our understanding of his mission?

Can you share about a time when the truth of Jesus has brought light to you or someone you know?

The Rejected Creator

John 1:10-13

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

1 Peter 2:4-5

As you come to [Jesus], the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Why do you think the world did not recognize or receive Jesus, even though He made it?

What practices help you to grow to “receive” Jesus in new ways and “believe in His name” with greater faith?

The Glory of the Son

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Hebrews 1:3

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

What is significant about “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”?

How have you experienced both grace and truth in your relationship with Jesus?

How does our knowledge of God’s word and our willingness to “dwell” among others help us grow in grace and truth?
