Discussion Guide: See the Christmas Light Week 1

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today, we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the primary goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together?

This Week’s Topic

See the Christmas Light

Today’s Topic

John 1:1-4

Discussion Questions

What role do Christmas lights play in your holiday traditions?

Eternal Light

John 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

What does “the Word was with God and the Word was God” mean?

What does John 1:1-2 reveal about the relationship within the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)?

How does the eternal nature of Christ shape your understanding of him as Lord and Savior?

How can pondering Christ as the unchanging, eternal Word increase your trust in him this year at Christmas?

Creator Light

John 1:3

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

What does this verse teach us about Jesus’s involvement in creation?

How does John 1:3 give meaning to your own life and purpose?

Can you name one thing or person Jesus created that you are particularly thankful for in your current season of life?

Life-Giving Light

John 1:4

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

What does it mean that “in him was life”? How does Jesus provide spiritual life to humanity?

How is the “light of all mankind” described here similar to or different from physical light?

Can you share about a time in your life when you received much-needed “light” from Jesus?

How can pondering and celebrating the birth of Jesus at Christmas time fill our lives with greater light?

Closing Thought

Silent Night, Joseph Mohr

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
’round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace,
sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
heav’nly hosts sing, “Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!”

Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, love’s pure light
radiant beams from Thy holy face
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!

Silent night! Holy night!
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
with the angels let us sing
“Alleluia” to our King:
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born.

Spend the final moments of your time together praying for one another and thanking God for lighting our lives through the birth of his Son.
