Discussion Guide: Reversal Week 14

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the main goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for, or  anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together.

This Week’s Topic

Today, we continue our series titled, Reversal. We will be taking some time to walk through the Gospel account of Luke. Luke was an historian who set out to document the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and the impact it had on the world of his day. What we see in Luke’s account is that when Jesus gets involved in the life of a person, things get turned upside-down and inside-out. Jesus brings about a reversal of everything we thought we knew.

Discussion Questions

What do you love most about Mosaic?

Luke 12:22-31

“And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.”

How would you summarize Jesus’ teaching here?

How does this view of money & possessions differ from the view of our culture?

When it comes to giving and church, what thoughts or feelings tend to rise up in you?

Tithe.ly, Bible Verses About Money: 9 Biblical Principles of Money & Possessions

“Consider these statistics on verses about money in the bible: 16 out of 38 of Jesus’ parables deal with money and possessions. Nearly 25% of Jesus’ words in the New Testament deal with biblical stewardship. 1 out of 10 verses in the Gospels deal with money. There are more than 2,000 scriptures on tithing, money, and possessions in the Bible, which is twice as many as faith and prayer combined

There’s a direct correlation between the way we handle our money and our faith. When it comes to money, we will either worship wealth or worship with our wealth.”

Why might someone who regularly participates in a church not give to that church financially?

What does our financial generosity, or lack thereof, reveal about our view of money?

Why do you think Jesus spoke to the issue of finances so often?

Closing Thought

Luke 12:32-34

“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

What does Jesus mean when He uses the word, “treasure,” in Luke 12?

How does our monthly budget reveal what we treasure most?

Have you ever thought about putting together a financial plan that includes giving to church/ministry on a consistent basis? If not, what might need to change to make that a reality?
