09 Oct Discussion Guide: Reversal Week 9
Before We Get Started
For our discussion today we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.
Prayer
Because the main goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for, or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together.
This Week’s Topic
Today, we continue our series titled, Reversal. We will be taking some time to walk through the Gospel account of Luke. Luke was an historian who set out to document the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and the impact it had on the world of his day. What we see in Luke’s account is that when Jesus gets involved in the life of a person, things get turned upside-down and inside-out. Jesus brings about a reversal of everything we thought we knew.

Discussion Questions
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Luke 9:23-25
“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”
What would the cross have meant to those first century Jews?
So then, what is Jesus saying when He tells them/us to take up our cross?
How might God use the people He has called you to follow Him alongside of to help bring about the life transformation He wants to accomplish in you?
Proverbs 27:17
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
What happens when a blacksmith uses an iron hammer to sharpen and sharpen and iron tool? How is that similar to the discipleship Jesus wants to accomplish in our lives?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship
“Discipleship is not an offer that man makes to Christ.”
“When Christ calls a man He bids him to come and die.”
What is the offer Jesus extends to us when He invites us to follow Him?
How does Jesus’ priority for us differ from the priorities we usually set for ourselves?
Yet, why is this priority the priority we ultimately need, even though it may not be what we want?
So then, what would walking away from that offer accomplish in our lives?
Closing Thought
How does Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection give us the trust, humility, and power to follow Him into all that He is calling us?
