Discussion Guide: Differently The Same – Mission Part 1

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the main goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for, or  anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together.

This Week’s Topic

This week we continue our new Fall series titled Differently the Same. A lot has changed over the past two years, both out there in our world and internally within each of us. However, in light of all the things that are different today, there are some things that remain the same. One of those things is the purpose, mission, and vision we are called to as followers of Christ. During this sermon series we will be taking a fresh look at that mission, and the core values we believe God has called us to pursue together as Mosaic Church: Worship, Community and Mission.

What Mission Looks Like Part 1

Discussion Questions

Alan Hirsch

“It’s not that the church has a mission, my friends, it’s that God’s mission has a Church.”

How would you define God’s mission in the earth?

Acts 13:47-49

“For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.”

How would you describe the state of our world, nation, and/or state today?

How might the Gospel bring healing and life to those broken and dead places?

What are some practical ways we might could display and communicate the Gospel to those places?

2 Corinthians 5:18-20

“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

If God’s mission is to reconcile people back to Himself, which people do you think that refers to?

What obstacles might keep us from “going” to the people God is “sending” us to who are different than ourselves?

How does loving others the way God loves us bring healing to our souls in addition to theirs?

Closing Thought

What are some practical things we can do together to show that kind of love to the world around us?
