Discussion Guide: Differently The Same – Worship Part 3

Before We Get Started

For our discussion today we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.

Prayer

Because the main goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for, or  anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together.

This Week’s Topic

This week we continue our new Fall series titled Differently the Same. A lot has changed over the past two years, both out there in our world and internally within each of us. However, in light of all the things that are different today, there are some things that remain the same. One of those things is the purpose, mission, and vision we are called to as followers of Christ. During this sermon series we will be taking a fresh look at that mission, and the core values we believe God has called us to pursue together as Mosaic Church: Worship, Community and Mission.

What Worship Looks Like Part 3

Discussion Questions

Why do you think people in our culture are so quick to label others? Have you ever felt labeled by someone?

Genesis 18:22-26

“So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

What does it mean for God to be just?

What does it mean for God to be merciful?

Which do you prefer, God’s justice or God’s mercy?

Genesis 18:25-26

“Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

What does the word judgment mean?

What knowledge must one possess in order to judge another?

How have you seen people’s judgment towards others bring division in our world today?

Is there a proper and righteous time for judgement? If so, when when?

Romans 5:15-17

“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s [Adam’s] trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.”

What does it mean when we say our culture is “individualistic?”

How does that individualism contribute to the division in our nation?

How might a more corporate vision of our nation, our community, and our relationships impact the division of our nation?

How does the Gospel, the Truth that Christ’s righteousness covers our wickedness, compare with, or contradict, the individualistic mindset in our nation?

How can the kind of grace and merci enable us, as followers of Christ, to walk together in loving unity despite all the ethnic, political, and cultural differences that exist in our church?

How might a community like us, loving, serving, and walking in unity with one another, impact the world around us?

Closing Thought

What threatens to prevent you from living and loving like that?
