04 Jul Discussion Guide: Beloved
Before We Get Started
For our discussion today we will be using the sermon series discussion guides. If you would like to follow along you can access this discussion guide on the website at mosaicchurchaustin.com and then select “community group resources” in the menu options.
Prayer
Because the main goal of our time together is to establish relationships and learn how to walk with one another in all that God has called us to be and do, we’d like to begin by praying for one another. So, does anyone have anything you’d like us to pray for, or anything to share regarding how you’ve seen God moving in your life that we can celebrate together.
This Week’s Topic
This week we begin a new series titled Beloved. This series will be taking us through the book of 1 John. We will be taking a look at how the Gospel, the true story of the sacrificial love Christ has for us, makes us whole.
Today’s Topic
Made Whole Through Fellowship
Discussion Questions
How would you define the following words?
- Love
- Wholeness
- Fellowship
How do those concepts relate to one another?
Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica
“When we say that in Him there is a procession of love, we show that God produced creatures not because He needed them, nor because of any other extrinsic reason, but on account of the love of His own goodness.”
Love always wants to be expressed, experienced, and shared. Why is that?
If that’s true, then what does that tell us about God?
What does that tell us about ourselves?
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
If our purpose is to be a reflection of who God is, and if God is a loving and diverse community, then how ought we to treat one another?
How might that kind of fellowship make an impact on us? How might it impact our world?
Acts 2:42-47
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Closing Thought
How does seeing the Father’s love through the sacrifice of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit enable us to love one another with that kind of Trinitarian love?
