Discussion Guide: A Conversation About Death

Before We Get Started

For our time together today we will be using a discussion guide based off of the sermon this Sunday. However, in light of the loss of Pastor Keivon last week we would like to start with a time of prayer. Here are some areas we want to pray for:

  • Pastor Keivon’s wife, Katie, and their two boys.
  • Keivon’s mom
  • Mosaic Church pastors and staff
  • Mosaic Church community
  • God’s nearness and comfort as we mourn as those who have hope in the future

This Week’s Topic

In response to the passing of Pastor Keivon Liburd, this week’s sermon is dealing with the biblical view of death, and how we as Christians can still have hope in the midst of such difficult times.

Today’s Topic

A Conversation About Death

Discussion Questions

Have you ever lost someone near and dear to you? If so, how did that affect you personally?

Hebrews 2:14-15

“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Why do you think death is so hard for us to deal with?

How do think the denial of God and the unwillingness to face death in light of eternity has impacted our society?

In what ways can death be enlightening for us?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

How does the Christian view of death differ from ever other faith system or worldview?

How does that difference change the way we respond to the idea, and the reality, of death?

Closing Thought

How does the resurrection of Jesus change the meaning of death?
