| A little less than three years ago, my life, and Mosaic Church Austin, were permanently changed by one phone call from someone I did not know: the outgoing lead pastor at Texas Oaks Baptist Church (TOBC), a man named James Torrey.
James was considering retiring from pastoring and wanted to know if Mosaic would be interested in starting a south campus in the TOBC building off of Slaughter Lane. James and I got to know one another, worked through a process of discernment, and our Mosaic elder team felt led to say “yes” to an exciting, but daunting, opportunity: starting a new work in South Austin from scratch, virtually overnight, as we simultaneously launched Pastor Alvin Brown to Ft. Worth to begin Mosaic Church Fort Worth.
What began with a group of about 75 people (split between former TOBC members and Mosaic members who already lived South) has blossomed into a fruitful congregation of roughly 200 people less than three years later.
We now have a team of four part-time staff, accompanied by many amazing volunteer team members and some brand-new deacons. God has been faithful and met us at Mosaic South over and over again! In light of that, I wanted to bring you up to speed on a few important developments:
- Mosaic South will be going to two services on September 7! For those of you reading this who attend Mosaic South, we could use your help finalizing our new service times. Please fill out this form to give us your input, if you have not already.
We recently added our first full-time staff person at Mosaic South, Sami Galelecha. Sami will be our full-time site director, and we are excited that he has said yes to stepping into this new season of leadership in his life. He and his wife, Amanda, are amazing people and have been members at Mosaic for many years. He brings a background of working with teens and doing administrative work for after-school programs.
- You may know that we recently did a special financial ask at Mosaic South to help provide for this needed role, as well as to fund new playground equipment. We received around $30,000, which is an incredibly generous amount! Thank you to all who gave!
- As we turn our eye towards continued growth through the addition of a second service, we are in need of adding additional volunteers on Sunday mornings to fill key positions. You can look at opportunities now and hear a little more on Sunday.
All of this represents a giant milestone to celebrate in our history… it’s remarkable!
Thanks be to God for His faithfulness, and to so many of you for all your hard work and dedication over the past few years.
As always, we believe the best is yet to come!
