05 Sep Post-Back to School Hangover, Opportunities to Change Lives, Money and Food
If you’re reading this because the title piqued your interest, or if you’re like me and just can’t stop thinking about what an amazing Sunday we just had together…either way, I’m glad you are reading.
First, what a great moment that was on Sunday—from the super fun musical opener (I think some of us pulled a few muscles making that dance happen) to all the vision cast, to our prayer for God to entrust us with the students of our city, it was a great day. Thanks to all who were a part of making that day happen!
Second, if you were there, you heard us talk about what we do (and have been doing) primarily at Live Oak Elementary and, now, Deerpark Middle School. Over the past years, we have helped the school in many ways: we make Christmas happen for dozens of families each year, we give Christmas gifts to and provide breakfasts for the teachers and faculty, we have done school supply drives, and also feed a number of kids over the weekend when they are not at school receiving free or reduced meals.
But, the primary thing we have done to really make an impact is to provide mentors to at-risk kids. I have personally been a mentor for going on 7 years now, and not only has it changed the life of one young man, whom I have followed up into middle school, but it has changed my life as well.
By having just a 30 minute a week conversation with a young person, you really can make a huge difference. When you hear that, you think: Really? I can make a difference in just 30 minutes? I can promise you the answer is, YES!
We are having a special one-hour training that is mandatory for all new prospective mentors, put on by RRISD (if you don’t make the one here at Mosaic, you will need to attend it at the RRISD Admin building). They are kind enough to come to us, as we put many mentors into the schools every year. That training will be this coming Sunday, September 9 at 10:45 am in Conference Room B in our office building.
Please register your attendance here if you have not already!
Finally, we have our annual financial meeting this Sunday afternoon from 2 – 3 pm.
By God’s grace, we have an excellent report to give you in terms of Mosaic’s overall financial picture. This meeting is for our members only, typically lasts no more than an hour, and will be held in our Family Room. No registration is necessary and no child care is provided, although children of members are welcome to join their parents.
Finally, our church-wide fast begins today, Wednesday, through Friday, culminating in a special Night of Worship at 6:30 pm in our new Student Center.
I hope you will join us for the fast at whatever level you can. Our prayers and fasting not only change the world, God meets us in that space that we give Him, and He changes us, as well.
Much love to you,
Morgan
