26 Jul Last Call – The Gospel and Diversity
Happy hottest week in the history of ever! We are in the throws of a Texas summer and it seems like there is no escaping the heat. On Monday as I drove home from a date with Ashley, she asked me why I was taking multiple pictures of my dashboard. The answer is I’m a weather geek, and I was watching numbers tick up—111…112…113…114. One Hundred and Fourteen Degrees! That’s HOT and I wanted to document the insanity of that kind of heat!
While the sidewalks are hot enough to fry an egg, they aren’t the only things heating up. If you have been paying attention at all you know there has been a firestorm raging in our country around immigration and how we as a country interact with immigrants. We feel like this is an important conversation not only for our political leaders to engage in, but for us as the body of Christ to also work and think through together. Regardless of our earthy citizenship, all followers of Jesus are also citizens of another Kingdom. As Christians it is not only our job to be good citizens in the places we live, but to be a people who bring the values of Jesus’s Kingdom into the world we currently occupy. With that in mind, this Friday night we will be continuing with the theme of “Belonging” in our next installment of The Gospel And Diversity, or TGA as we call it. We will explore what it looks like to be made in God’s image, what our identities are and what it means to “love your neighbor as yourself.”
We won’t be telling you what to think, but we will set the table for discussions around how we think about others in light of what God says about us all. As always TGA will create a safe space for the exchange of ideas around these critical conversations. It is our hope that as we come together and apply the gospel to these conversations we will find our common ground as we listen and learn from one another. Our church is made up of lots of amazing individuals who have chosen not to function in isolation, but who contribute to the common cause of the gospel of Jesus, collectively. No church can have a thriving Gospel witness in a city without its people choosing to be a part of something bigger than themselves and their busy schedules. We all want to be part of something great, but it takes us doing things like this together, strategically and regularly, to make a difference. We know that discussing things like this can sound scary and intimidating, but that’s ok, and that’s precisely why we have these events. So that the people of God in this Mosaic can come together, exercise faith and vulnerability to engage in this way, and then in turn demonstrate love and grace towards one another as we seek to learn and grow from the other perspectives of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Our next TGA is this Friday night and we would love to have you (or have you back!). It’s not too late to register. Registration is free and childcare is available, but only if you register below! I hope to see you there!
