Discussion Guide: Where Can Wisdom Be Found? Week 16

Prayer

Take the first 10 minutes of your time together to listen to what God is doing in one another’s lives and pray for any specific needs people in your group may have.

John Lennon topped the charts in 1971 with a song that wondered what life would be like if there was no God. Lennon, along with much of 21st Century American Culture claims that removing God from the equation liberates us to define life’s meaning for ourselves, and this kind of ‘wisdom’ has been elevated in our society as if we have reached the pinnacle of progress. Yet, thousands of years earlier the author of Ecclesiastes had already attempted this little thought experiment and in the end came to understand that life is only worth living when God is at the center of it. In our discussion we will take a look at both sides of the argument and see how faith in Jesus and the pursuit of His Kingdom not only gives our life an immovable purpose, but makes us into a people who can change the world.

Discussion Questions

Ologundudu Abraham

“Why did God create man when he had angels and elders that always worship him? You are special to God.”

What would you say are some of the most important inventions in the history of the world? Why?

Why did those inventions come into existence? In other words, what was the motivation behind their being invented?

With that in mind, how important would you say purpose is when it comes to our lives?

Ecclesiastes 1:16-17

I said to myself, “Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.” So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

Where does the purpose of something come from?

Leader Notes

The purpose of something can only come from the one who created or invented it. The one who uses or benefits from that something can use that something for a different purpose if he/she wants, but that never changes the intended purpose as defined by the one who invented it or created it.

If there is no God, then what does that mean about the purpose of our existence?

Leader Notes

If there is no God then the only other possible explanation of our existence is that we are the result of some accidental circumstance and therefore life has no meaning outside of what you, or someone else, define that meaning to be. If there is no Creator then we have to step into the role of defining who we are and what life is all about. Without a Creator there is no purpose and without purpose anything goes and nothing truly matters because whatever you can hope to accomplish in your lifetime ultimately dies with you, or at the very least within a couple of generations.

What are some things that people pursue as their purpose for living?

Why do you think we chase after those things?

Leader Notes

Because we are inherently aware of the fact that something has gone horribly wrong with the world. We look around and see famine, injustice, poverty, war, etc. and something inside of us says, “this is not how it ought to be.” In response to that feeling we look to other created things to try to satisfy, or maybe even pacify, the fear and anxiety we experience. We just can’t bring ourselves to admit that life doesn’t really matter because we know deep inside that it does and therefore, having removed God from the equation, we are forced to look to other created things to find meaning and purpose. Coincidentally, the very fact that we know something has gone horribly wrong with the world is an indicator that we also presuppose the world must have a purpose other than what we are experiencing.

In the end, where do those things tend to leave us? Why is that?

Leader Notes

In the end those things leave us just as frustrated and confused because as we said before, only the Creator of a thing can give ultimate meaning and purpose to the thing that was created. So we can live for money, sex, or power and in the end we will still find ourselves wanting even if we achieve great success in those areas. Creation can never be a substitute for the Creator.

What does the existence of God mean about the purpose of our lives?

Leader Notes

The existence of God means that not only is there a design to our world and our lives, but there is a purpose that supersedes our self. It means that we are part of a bigger picture and therefore our lives have significance and meaning. Like a Stone Mason in the 14th century chiseling on one stone that will one day find its place in the massive cathedral that the Architect has designed. That Mason may spend 15 years chiseling and shaping that stone before he finally sees where it fits in the grand scheme of the beautiful building that is being formed. It is precisely because he knows the stone isn’t the end in-and-of itself, but rather that what he is doing is part of something much larger, that the Mason continues to press on even when the work gets difficult.

How does that purpose change the way we see ourselves? How does it change the way we see other people?

If those views are implications of the existence of God, why do you suppose so many people want to do away with the idea that God exists?

Leader Notes

Because if God does exists, not only does it give us purpose, but it also means that we are not in charge and therefore cannot live life anyway we want to. See God, if He is the Creator, is also the One who judges whether or not we are accomplishing the purpose for which He created us. People don’t tend to like the idea of having to submit to another authority. We would much rather get to decide what’s right and wrong for ourselves, to do what makes us happy and feel good whenever the moment arises. Having a Creator and a Judge means we have to answer to someone for the way we choose to live life and we see that as a major restriction. The reality, though, is that true freedom is only experienced when the right restrictions are put in place. A fish my want to be free of the water, but if he is removed he doesn’t experience freedom at all.

William Temple

“My worth is what I am worth to God and that is a marvelous great deal. “

If you were God, and the people you made for a specific purpose decided they didn’t want anything to do with you or your purpose, what would you do about it?

How is God’s response in sending Jesus to live the life we have not lived and die the death we should have died different from how you would have responded?

How does this amazing grace change the way you feel about God not only existing, but having a specific purpose for your life?

Closing Thought

Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

How can we, living in the hope of God’s purpose for us, bring light and life into the broken world around us?
