Discussion Guide: The Journey Week 4

PRAYER

Take the first few minutes of your time together to listen to what God is doing in one another’s lives and pray for any specific needs people in your group may have.

Today’s Discussion

This week we we continue our new series called The Journey.  We are walking through the book of Hebrews and looking at what it is we need in our lives if we want to make it through the ups and downs, the good and the bad, of this journey called life. We will see that if we have Jesus and one another then the journey can also be our greatest adventure.

Leader Notes

The Bibles answer to the difficulties of life is that the world we currently live in is not the world as God intended it to be. Genesis 1 tells us that after 6 days of creation God looked at all He had made and proclaimed, “It is VERY good.” There was no sickness, no disease, no death, no fear, no rejection, no envy or selfishness. Life was as God intended it to be, it was Shalome. But, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s commands to not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil all of that design was fractured. When they chose to no longer image God and reflect who He is to the world, but to reflect their own glory and become like God, suddenly fear, insecurity, envy, strife and pride entered the equation. Over the past few thousand years the human heart has simply reproduced that rebellion and we have invented new ways to elevate ourselves to the place of God. As a result we have a world full of people who seek to use and abuse others, to rule over others, to ensure their own success and achievement at the expense of others. On top of that, creation itself has gone haywire as humanity has neglected our responsibility to manage creation, and now there is sickness and disease and death.

The Bible’s response to this dilemma is to acknowledge this brokenness resulting from sin, and to offer the solution of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Jesus has overthrown the powers of sin and death, and through His resurrection has re-established His Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven and is putting individuals’ lives back together, so that through us He might put creation back together as well.

Romans 5:1-8

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Which one of those responses above produces hope in the human heart?

What is it about the Gospel that produces, fosters and magnifies hope in the hearts of people?

Romanos 5:1-8

Hebrews 7:18-22

“For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.'” This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.”

How does Jesus being the “guarantor of a better covenant” impact your perspective on the difficulties of our world?

Hebreos 7:18-19,21-22

Closing Thought

How can that also impact the way we respond to others in the midst of their own difficulties?
