Today’s Discussion
This week we begin our Christmas series, Searching for Christmas. Over the next few weeks, as we draw nearer to the celebration of the coming of Jesus, we will be looking at the longing and the hope the story of Christmas arouses in the human heart. What is it that we are all so eager to experience, to know, to have? What is it that all the excitement and gifts and lights are ultimately pointing us to? Let’s find out together.

Why do you think Christmas elicits such a sense of hope and joy in so many people this time of year?
Porque crees que la Navidad provoca un sentido de esperanza y gozo en tantas personas en este tiempo del año?
Christmas elicits a sense of joy in our hearts because, whether you are a Christian or not, Christmas carries with it a sense of hope that things will be put right again. There’s a sense of beauty with all the lights. There’s a sense of reconciliation and restoration as we take time to think about the needs and wants of others when we’re looking for that perfect gift. Even if you don’t believe in Jesus, most people at least still associate the idea that a loving God came to rescue His people. Even if that is not a fact to you, the sentiment still carries a sense of awe and rightness. There’s a sense of unity in the midst of our diversity. In other words, for the believer and non-believer alike, Christmas gives us a glimpse into a world as God intended it to be.
La Navidad provoca un sentido de gozo en nuestros corazones porque, Cristiano o no, la Navidad trae un sentido de esperanza que las cosas serán arregladas. Hay un sentido de belleza con todas las luces. Hay un aire de reconciliación y restauración al tomar tiempo para pensar en las necesidades y deseos de los demás, cuando andamos buscando el regalo perfecto. Aunque no crean en Cristo, casi toda la gente asocia la idea que un Dios amoroso vino a rescatar a su gente.

What is it about the story of the birth of Jesus, the King of kings, that touches your own heart?

Romans 1:19-23
”’For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. ‘”
Why, in the midst of the joy we feel from the story of our King coming, do we and many others still resist His rule and reign and authority in our lives?
Romanos 1:19-23
‘Pero lo que se conoce acerca de Dios es evidente dentro de ellos, pues Dios se lo hizo evidente. Porque desde la creación del mundo, Sus atributos invisibles, Su eterno poder y divinidad, se han visto con toda claridad, siendo entendidos por medio de lo creado, de manera que ellos no tienen excusa. Pues aunque conocían a Dios, no Lo honraron (no Lo glorificaron) como a Dios ni Le dieron gracias, sino que se hicieron vanos en sus razonamientos y su necio corazón fue entenebrecido. Profesando ser sabios, se volvieron necios, y cambiaron la gloria del Dios incorruptible por una imagen en forma de hombre corruptible, de aves, de cuadrúpedos y de reptiles. ‘
Porque, en medio del gozo que sentimos de la historia del Rey que viene, nosotros y también otros, resistimos Su ley, reinado, y autoridad en nuestras vidas?
Even though Christmas elicits such feelings of joy and hope, the human heart still tends to reject the implications of the coming of Jesus as our True King. See, some people are ok with idea of a loving God coming to love His people. Others are even ok with the idea of that loving God sending His Son to die for the sins of His people. But, the idea that this loving God has come to not just die for our sins but to re-establish His Kingdom rule on earth and over our lives is a pill most people have a hard time swallowing. We’re cool with God giving us something, like forgiveness, but not so much with God taking something, like our “freedom” to live life however we want. What most people don’t understand is that in His love for us, Jesus has designed our lives and the Universe to function in a way that images who He is, and therefore, we are not “free” to live however we want because if we live life in a way that violates our purpose, our design, then we suffer the consequences in the same way my car suffers if I put water in the gas tank. And, in our culture, in our world, the human heart is hell-bent on wanting to put water in our gas tanks. To acknowledge that Jesus has come, not just to die for our sins, but to re-establish His reign in our lives is to say that I am not god of my own life, king of my own domain, and I don’t want to give up control like that because that is either too scary for me to trust God, or too humiliating to admit that the way I want to live my life may not be the way my life was meant to be lived.
Aunque la Navidad provoca sentimientos de gozo y esperanza, el corazón humano suele a rechazar las implicaciones de la venida de Jesús como nuestro rey verdadero. Algunas personas están de acuerdo con la idea de un Dios que viene a amar a su gente.
Otros están bien con la idea de que un Dios amoroso mandó a Su hijo a morir por los pecados de su gente. Pero, la idea que ese mismo Dios amoroso no solo vino a morir por nuestros pecados pero también a restablecer su Reino en la tierra y sobre nuestras vidas es algo que casi a todos nos cuesta tragar. Nos gusta que Dios nos de algo como el perdón, pero no nos gusta mucho con que Dios nos quite algo, como nuestra “libertad” para vivir la vida como querramos.
Lo que mucha gente no comprende es que Cristo en su amor por nosotros, ha diseñado nuestras vidas y el Universo para que funcione de tal forma que reflejen quién es Él, entonces, no somos “libres” para vivir como querramos, porque si vivimos la vida de una forma que viola nuestro propósito, y diseño, entonces sufrimos las consecuencias, de la misma forma como mi carro se daña si le pongo agua al tanque de gasolina.
Y, en nuestra cultura, en nuestro mundo, el corazón humano siempre quiere ponerle agua a los tanques de gasolina. El reconocer que Cristo ha venido, no solo a morir por nuestros pecados, pero también a restablecer su reino en nuestras vidas es decir que no somos dioses de nuestras vidas, reyes de nuestros propios dominios, y no queremos perder el control así, porque es muy humillante el admitir que la forma en que quiero vivir mi vida no es la forma en que mi vida debía ser vivida.
How does the reality of Jesus, the King, coming in the flesh to live the life you have not lived and die the death you should have died, break the power of evil and rebellion in our hearts?
