08 Nov Discussion Guide: Live Big Week 2
Prayer
Take the first 10 minutes of your time together to listen to what God is doing in one another’s lives and pray for any specific needs people in your group may have.
This week we continue our series called Live Big. We will be spending the next few weeks looking at God’s generosity towards us in the Gospel, and how that Truth should impact the way we live, give and serve the world around us.
Discussion Questions
Martin Luther King Jr., On the Parable of the Good Samaritan
“The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”
Can you think of some examples or stories where the service of some made a dramatic impact on many?
How do you think a “Good Samaritan” cultural mindset could impact our city, state, or nation?
What would you say are some reasons people are hesitant to volunteer or serve?
1 Peter 4:8-10
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Why do you think Peter connects our serving others to the idea of being ”faithful stewards of God’s grace”?
Timothy Keller, The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism
“The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.”
How does a proper understanding of the Gospel free us to serve others out of a place of unconditional love rather than guilt or obligation?
Closing Thought
Who is a person, or a people, God might be calling you to serve?
