Today’s Discussion
This week we continue our series titled Genesis, where we will be walking through the first book of the bible by the same name. We will be exploring who God is, what was His purpose in creating the world and humanity, and how, in the midst of all the brokenness our sin has brought to His creation, how is God putting it all back together again. I want to challenge us over the course of this series to think deeply, speak honestly, and perhaps even learn how to love more passionately. Let’s get started with the beginning.

“God made the city to be a developmental tool, a form of cultural ‘gardening’, designed to draw out the riches he put into the earth, nature and the human soul at creation. Even after the fall, cities are places of ‘common grace’ though each factor also now can be used (and is!) for evil purposes.”
When a city is at its best what should it provide for its citizens?

Genesis 11:1-4
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
In your opinion, what causes a city to not be all the good things it should be?
What is at the heart of that kind of thinking?

From Morgan’s Sermon this past Sunday:
“Well, there’s the liberal analysis, which says that cities are broken because they are filled with
poverty and racism and it’s because of the hard hearted conservatives that they aren’t getting
fixed. And then there’s the conservative analysis, which says that cities are broken because of too much government interference and the dirty liberals who just mess everything up.
And then there’s the analysis of many people in the church sometimes, which is that it’s the
atheists and the media who are breaking our cities. But I want you to know something and see something here. This is telling us that all those things, though they may be true in part, all those things, all those ways that cities are broken are just symptoms of something larger. This is telling us that when we see the poverty and see the racism and see sometimes government putting its nose and reach where it shouldn’t…because that has happened throughout history, hasn’t it? This is telling us that when we see those things and more, those are just symptoms of something far larger far deeper, far more profound. What is it?
This passage tells us:
“Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the
heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves”
What causes the brokenness in cities? What brings the brokenness is the combined pride and self-centeredness of people who come to together to make a name for themselves. All the other stuff is just downstream, all the other stuff is just a symptom, all the brokenness downstream comes from someone or some group looking to make a name for themselves upstream.”
The issue lies in the heart of humanity that seeks, like Adam and Eve, to take what God intended for His glory and the wellbeing of others and uses it instead for their own glory and wellbeing at the expense of others. It is the desire for my name to be great, or my “people’s” name to be great that, by definition, forces me to have to put the name of others, and other people groups, down. After all, if my name is to be elevated then it requires others’ names to be devalued. This is what is at the heart of every prejudice, every racist view, every segregated system.
You see if God is love, then to glorify God’s name is to glorify, or elevate, love to the highest position. Therefore, a city whose focus is on using creation to glorify God will be a city where peace, justice, charity, equality, truth, etc. exist. And, a city whose focus is using creation to glorify a person or people group will be a city where strife, injustice, greed, prejudice, and deception exist because it is seeking the elevation of selfishness rather than love.

The city of God is the point of the Gospel. God’s call to Adam & Eve to be fruitful, fill the earth, and have dominion is a call to build a God-centered, love-centered, civilization. It was the self-centered, lust-filled, prideful and sinful choice of Adam that derailed that design. That idolatry then passed to Cain and every generation that followed to the point where we see the Tower of Babel where people want to make a name for themselves at the expense of others. There is only one power strong enough to overthrow and conquer the selfish nature of the human heart that has resulted from that sin. That power is unconditional love. And there is nothing that communicates unconditional love better than the God against whom we have rebelled being willing to step into the place of judgement we deserved and take that penalty upon Himself for the purpose of having us and restoring us back to the purpose for which we were designed.
Selfishness is rooted in fear, but Scripture tells us that perfect love casts our all fear. The Gospel, Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, are simply a means by which our sins are forgiven so we can go to Heaven some day, it is the means by which, yes our sins are forgiven, but also our hearts are regenerated by the love of God, we are made new again, and we are connected to an endless source of love from which we can now live life and love others, including our enemies, as a reflection of God’s glory. When I have everything I need in Christ and His love for me then there is nothing I need from anyone else, nor is there anything that can threaten my worth and value. When that becomes my reality, then I can freely give myself away. I can freely fight for the rights of others, for justice to prevail regardless of what it costs me. That is what produces a city in the pattern of what God intended cities to be.
Nota para el líder: La ciudad de Dios es el punto del Evangelio. El llamado de Dios a Adán y Eva a ser fructífero, llenar la tierra y tener dominio es un llamado a construir una civilización centrada en Dios, centrada en el amor. Fue la elección egocéntrica, llena de lujuria, orgullosa y pecaminosa de Adán la que descarriló ese diseño. Esa idolatría pasó luego a Caín y a cada generación que siguió hasta el punto en que vemos la Torre de Babel donde la gente quiere hacerse un nombre a expensas de los demás. Solo hay un poder lo suficientemente fuerte como para derrocar y conquistar la naturaleza egoísta del corazón humano que ha resultado de ese pecado. Ese poder es amor incondicional. Y no hay nada que comunique el amor incondicional mejor que el Dios contra el cual nos hemos rebelado estando dispuestos a entrar en el lugar del juicio que merecíamos y tomar esa pena sobre Sí Mismo con el propósito de tenernos y restaurarnos al propósito para el cual fueron diseñados.
El egoísmo está enraizado en el miedo, pero las Escrituras nos dicen que el amor perfecto arroja todo nuestro temor. El Evangelio, la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús, son simplemente un medio por el cual nuestros pecados son perdonados para que podamos ir al Cielo algún día, es el medio por el cual, sí, nuestros pecados son perdonados, pero también nuestros corazones son regenerados por el amor de Dios, somos hechos nuevos de nuevo, y estamos conectados a una fuente inagotable de amor de la cual ahora podemos vivir y amar a los demás, incluidos nuestros enemigos, como un reflejo de la gloria de Dios. Cuando tengo todo lo que necesito en Cristo y su amor por mí, no hay nada que necesite de nadie más, ni hay nada que pueda poner en peligro mi valor y mi valía. Cuando eso se convierte en mi realidad, entonces puedo entregarme libremente. Puedo luchar libremente por los derechos de los demás, para que la justicia prevalezca independientemente de lo que me cueste. Eso es lo que produce una ciudad en el patrón de lo que Dios quiso que fueran las ciudades.
