Discussion Guide: Genesis Week 10

PRAYER

Take the first few minutes of your time together to listen to what God is doing in one another’s lives and pray for any specific needs people in your group may have.

Today’s Discussion

This week we continue our series titled Genesis, where we will be walking through the first book of the bible by the same name. We will be exploring who God is, what was His purpose in creating the world and humanity, and how, in the midst of all the brokenness our sin has brought to His creation, how is God putting it all back together again. I want to challenge us over the course of this series to think deeply, speak honestly, and perhaps even learn how to love more passionately. Let’s get started with the beginning.

Discussion Questions

What are some examples of injustice around the world?

Genesis 18:22-26,32-33

So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

When you see evil & injustice how do you typically respond?

How did Abraham respond to the injustice of Sodom & Gomorroh?

Is his response different than yours? If so how & why?

What motivated Abraham to respond this way?

Morgan Stephens: Excerpt from Sunday’s Sermon

“Justice in the bible isn’t just not doing wrong things to others. Justice is doing to others what they deserve as image bearers of God.”

If you saw what Abraham saw, how might that change the way you view people when they act unjustly or sinfully towards you or others?

Who is the only truly righteous Man to ever live? Why do you say that?

If Jesus is the only truly righteous One, what does that mean about us?

Romans 5:8-11

…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

What does the life, death and resurrection of Jesus show us about God’s heart for the wicked?

Preguntas en Español

Romanos 5:8-11

Closing Thought

How does knowing that God’s justice towards our wickedness was to cover us with Christ’s righteousness, how should that affect the way we pray for, and participate in the life of our city?
