19 Aug Discussion Guide: For the Love Week 2
Ice Breaker
One of the things we value within community is fun. In the midst of all the pressures life throws at us, it is our ability to laugh, play and celebrate together that reminds us we serve a good, loving, and resurrected Lord who stands above it all. So, we want to take the first few minutes of our time together to play, have fun, and celebrate the fact that we belong to Jesus.
Today’s Ice Breaker: Stick the Landing
This exciting challenge is perfect for a head to head match and requires very little to play: just a water bottle and a table or solid surface. The point is to toss the bottle until you’re able to make it land right-side up. It sounds easy but it’s harder than you think! We love the simplicity of this one and the fact that it combines the demand for speed with a need for good aim and skill.
What You Will Need:
- A couple of water bottles (half full works best)
How to Play:
- When the you say, “Go!”, each player tosses the bottle in an attempt to get it to land right-side up on the table. The player to land it first wins. Another option is to set the clock for 60 seconds and the player who can land their bottle the most times in that minute wins.
Today’s Discussion
This week we continue our new series that will take us into the Fall titled For the Love. We will be walking through the Gospel of John and seeing God’s love as revealed through the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ. We will see that love may not always look and feel the way we think it should, but that if we will allow God’s love to reveal itself to us then our lives will never be the same.

John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
John 1 shows us the Triune nature of God. How does your understanding of the Trinity affect the way you think about and engage in relationships with others?

Here’s what the Trinity means in regards to how we view relationships & community.
- Relationships are not optional: The first thing God every said was not good, even prior to sin entering the picture, was for man to be alone. Adam was incapable of fulfilling his image-bearing purpose as an isolated individual. He had to have another human being, equal to him as a human and yet different than him in her sexuality, to be able to accurately reflect the relationship that exists between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- Relationships matter most: Because relationships are at the core of our design, our identity, it means that our relationships with others precede all other things in matters of importance. The way we treat others, love others, make others feel about themselves, is more important than anything you can accomplish as an individual.
- Love is the most powerful thing in the Universe: The Trinity means that God is not just loving, but is the very essence and definition of love. Therefore, love is the power that created the Universe, and created us. This means that loving others is the way in which we reflect God’s image to the world. Love is the purpose of our relationships, our community. Therefore, we are to repent when we offend and forgive when offended. We are to pursue one another in love when it is most difficult and least deserved, the way Christ pursued us. It means pushing away from the table, taking our ball and going home, or just checking out on people when it is inconvenient to us is not an option if we call ourselves followers of Christ.

- Las relaciones no son opcionales: lo primero que Dios dijo que no era bueno, incluso antes de que el pecado entrara, era que el hombre estuviera solo. John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1 tells us Jesus took on our humanity. If that’s true, how does that affect the way you see your physical, emotional, and psychological strengths and needs?
John 1 also tells us Jesus came in holiness (truth). If that’s true how does that affect the way you view your own choices? The choices of others?
Juan 1:14

The Gospel writers tell us Jesus came to bring justice into the world. If that’s true how should that affect the way you see, and respond to, injustices in our world?
What are some injustices that you find yourself burdened with?

John 1:18

The Gospels tell us Jesus came to suffer in our place and to bear our burdens. How does the fact that Jesus is familiar with your suffering affect the way you view your own moments of suffering?

John 1:11-13
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1 tells us Jesus came to redeem not just individuals, but a new kind of people who would follow Him in relationships with one another, on mission to see His justice, holiness, compassion, empathy, truth and grace reconcile people and creation back to Himself. What are some ways we can do that together as a community of Christ-followers?
