Discussion Guide: And He Answered Me Week 3

Community Groups Vision

If you have time and feel this would help the new people in your community group better understand what you are trying to accomplish as a group then take 2 minutes to show this video.

Today’s Discussion

This week we continue our new series titled And He Answered Me. We will be looking at the topic of prayer. Prayer is something we see all through Scripture, and yet it is something that many people who call themselves Christians do not practice on a regular basis. Could it be that we have misunderstood what prayer is and what God has intended it to accomplish in our lives? Let’s find out as we discuss this together.

Discussion Questions

What is the most valuable thing you posess? Why is it so valuable to you?

Where does the value of something come from?

2 Samuel 6:16-22

As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord , and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord . And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house. And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants’ female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord , who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord —and I will celebrate before the Lord . I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”

How would you describe David’s identity? How did he see himself?

Where did his identity seem to come from?

How did David wrestle with the tension of who he knew God had called him to be and what his culture told him to be?

Leader Notes

Beyonce Knowles

“Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, I only have to follow my heart and concentrate on what I want to say to the world. I run my world.”

Where does our culture tell us our identity/worth comes from?

Is that a healthy way to live? Why or why not?

If you’re being honest, where do you tend to tell yourself your identity/worth comes from?

Is that a healthy way to live? Why or why not?

Leader Notes

note

2 Corinthians 5:14-17

For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

How does the Gospel give us a different and new kind of identity/worth?

If we truly believed Jesus sees us the way Scripture says He does, how might that impact the way we see ourselves and the weight we give to the perceptions of others?

Closing Thought

How can a consistant prayer life help us live out that Gospel-identity?
